To Ratify the Settlement

Finally negotiations between Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara and the Crown have come to an end and a draft deed of settlement is available for your perusal on our website www.kaiparamoana.com  and the Office of Treaty Settlements website www.ots.govt.nz.  All registered members 18 years of age and over will be sent a ratification information booklet and voting pack shortly.  A postal ballot will take place from 15 July to 27 August.  A series of hui is being organised within that timeframe to give whānau an opportunity to understand the proposed settlement and the voting process.  Voting will take place by postal ballot and there will be a sealed ballot box at each hui for you to cast your vote in confidence if you wish.  Otherwise postal ballots must be postmarked on or before Friday 26 August and received by the Returning Officer no later than Wednesday 31 August.  You will be asked to accept or reject the settlement:  Yes or No.

Redress in brief

The draft Deed of Settlement details the redress that was outlined in the Agreement in Principle, and new redress that has been negotiated over the last 18 months.  The key components of the redress are:

  1.  Historical Account
  2.  Crown Acknowledgements of Treaty breach
  3.  Apology to Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara
  4.  Quantum of $22.1m plus interest from AIP and accumulated rentals
  5.  Commercial redress incl. Woodhill Forest
  6.  Cultural redress incl. Atuanui
  7.  Ten Acre Block redress properties
  8.  Joint vesting of Parakai Recreation Reserve
  9.  Other forms of redress incl. Te Kawenata

If you have not registered, you can do so at any time during the voting period by contacting the Returning Officer on 0800 922 822 or 09 973 5212 to receive a Special Voting pack.

Advertisements will appear in the New Zealand Herald and local newspapers during the second week of July with hui dates.  Postal ballot information and any change of date for hui will be posted on the website so check www.kaiparamoana.com.
