N0.29 SEPTEMBER 2011
Greetings to you all! Tēnā koutou katoa!
This is just to let you know that the hapū/marae of Ngāti Whātua in the south Kaipara have reached a long-awaited milestone. Following a Waitangi Tribunal report, negotiations between Ngāti Whātua representatives and the Crown resulted in a deed of settlement which has now been ratified by postal ballot.
Voter turnout was 43.2% - or 432 voters from a register of 1001. Of the votes received 396 voted YES to the settlement; 31 voted NO and 5 returned blank. Therefore 91.67% of voters agreed to accept the settlement.
To mark the occasion of the Crown and Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara signing the Deed of Settlement, you are invited to a signing ceremony on Friday 9 September 2011, at Aotea/Shelly Beach.
Aotea/Shelly Beach has particular historical significance as a large gathering hosted by the well-respected Ngāti Whātua chief, Paora Tuhaere, took place there in 1884-5. Matters discussed at that meeting were taken by the Māori King Tawhiao to Queen Victoria in England and formed the basis of our Treaty claims.
Now that many of the issues have been acknowledged and redressed by the present government, the trustees of the post settlement governance entity, Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara, welcome Ngāti Whātua whānui, and dignitaries, guests, friends and the local community to join them in making history.
We also request your support for this event. Parking will be at a premium especially from 8am-3pm on Friday, so car-pooling would be helpful. Manuhiri are expected to arrive either by ferry or road so the wharf and the immediate roadway will need to be clear from 10.45-11.15am.
