Let us momentarily reflect on those who paved the way for us to achieve what we have for the benefit of Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara, those who are no longer here with us today, and those who have supported and believed in us succeeding in our endeavours to build a strong and safe future for our future generations. A big part of their aspirations was to see land that was wrongfully acquired by the government, returned to Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara. “Whaia te Kotahitanga o Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara” Seek to unite the people of Kaipara, was the motto for the formidable team the Crown had to deal with. I must acknowledge Waata Richards and Margaret Kawharu who were the driving force behind the claims process since it started back in 1995. The commitment made by all the claimants, the highs and lows, the joys and grievances experienced through this process were certainly overcome judging by the overwhelming success of the Deed of Settlement (DoS) signing at Aotea on 9th September 2011 - a job well done! Congratulations must also go to the organisers of the Deed of Settlement signing celebrations held at Aotea, especially Te Kahui-iti Morehu and whanau. It was a glorious day in every aspect, well done! Thank you to all who participated. Tēnā koutou katoa Since the signing of the DoS we will be doing business under the Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE), Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara Development Trust which was ratified by Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara last year. The trustees want to meet and korero with ngā whānau, hapū and marae to gain some indication of your aspirations, so we have planned hui to meet and korero with young and old from each and every one of the five marae and conduct a survey of your aspirations and how we may be able to assist and contribute to those aspirations.
